What to expect in the Merit Workshop for IB 150:

The goal of IB 150 Merit is to help students develop a deeper understanding of biological concepts covered in lecture and discussion. Students in Merit will attend a two-hour workshop twice a week instead of enrolling regular discussion.  It is an intensive workshop session where you will be working on challenging problems with your group based on concepts covered in lecture.  The instructor will be circulating among the groups to help you as needed to master the important biological concepts. Some of the concepts that you will be mastering in Merit are Mendelian genetics, population genetics, basic statistics, evolutionary processes, introductory animal and plant development and physiology.  Merit students will not be assigned extra homework and will attend the same lectures, take the same exams, and turn in the same assignments as everyone else in the class. You will just be spending more time in class learning biology and preparing for the challenging examinations. Because you are in class for more time, you will earn 1 credit hour of IB 199 credit.  This grade for IB 199 will be based on your preparation and participation during the workshops.

What to expect in the Merit Workshop of IB 202: Structure and Function

The goal of IB 202 Merit is to help students develop a deeper understanding of biological concepts covered in the 200 level course: Structure and Function. Students in Merit enroll in IB 199 and attend a two-hour workshop once a week.  It is an intensive workshop session where you will be working on challenging problems with your group based on concepts covered in lecture.  The focus of each workshop will be on lecture concepts that students find the most challenging on exams.  Some of the concepts that you will be mastering in IB 202 Merit will include angiosperm morphology and development, water and nutrient acquisition, bioenergenics and metabolism, hormones and endocrine system, muscular system, and neurological system. Merit students will not be assigned extra homework and will attend the same lectures, take the same exams, and turn in the same assignments as everyone else in the class. Because you are in class for more time, you will earn 1 credit hour of IB 199 credit.  This grade for IB 199 will be based on your preparation and participation during the workshops.

What to expect in Merit Workshop for IB 203: Ecology

The goal of IB 203 Merit is to help students develop a deeper understanding of biological concepts covered in the 200 level course, Ecology. Students participating in Merit will enroll in IB 199 and attend a two-hour workshop once a week.  It is an intensive workshop session where you will be working on challenging problems with your group based on concepts covered in lecture.  The focus of each workshop will be on lecture concepts that students find the most challenging on exams.  IB 203 exams have an essay component, so many of the workshops will help students prepare for this type of exam.   Some of the concepts that you will be mastering in IB 203 Merit will include climate and soils, life history strategies, population ecology, energy and ecosystems.  Just like other merit workshops, Merit students will not be assigned extra homework and will attend the same lectures, take the same exams, and turn in the same assignments as everyone else in the class. Because you are in class for more time, you will earn 1 credit hour of IB 199 credit.  This grade for IB 199 will be based on your preparation and participation during the workshops.

What to expect in Merit Workshop for IB 204:Genetics

The goal of IB 204 Merit is to help students develop a deeper understanding of biological concepts covered in the 200 level course, Genetics. IB 204 will require students to have excellent problem solving skills and the merit instructor will assist students in developing these skills. Some of the concepts that you will be mastering in IB 204 Merit will include DNA mutations, chromosomal mutations, DNA recombination, gene expression, gene regulation, inheritance, and genomics.
